For golfers the world over accommodation is not the most important part of their golf trip, for some maybe but not all. The golf courses are the number one priority and here in Ireland we certainly have them in abundance.
So now let’s do a little tour around the South West of Ireland and mention some of the best places to stay. Some are top of the range and others are just honest to goodness hotels and bed and breakfast places which I (Peter Keighery) personally have experienced over the last 20 years travelling with golfers from all over the world.
Arriving at Shannon Airport the nearest 5 Star Hotel is the wonderful Dromoland Castle just ten mins from Shannon, if you are playing Lahinch / Doonbeg and you would like a small hotel in a great little town then The Old Ground Hotel in Ennis is the one for you. Lovely old hotel with great history and terrific location 3 star.
In Lahinch , Vaughan Lodge is a beautiful small guesthouse/ hotel just 2 mins from the course and great food and wonderful rooms.
Terrific Bed/Breakfast in Doonbeg is Links Lodge, right beside the course. Of course accommodation at Doonbeg itself is amazing but may be a little pricey for some!!
As we head down the west coast towards Ballybunion there is only one place to stay there and that is the wonderful Teach De Broc just across the road from the Old Course. Owners Aoife and Seamus will look after you so well you won’t want to leave!!
Next stop Waterville and a must if you are overnighting there it has to be the 4 star Butler Arms, the great Charlie Chaplin used to stay here on his visits when he did a lot of fishing in the 60s/70s.
The Smugglers Inn is another terrific Bed and Breakfast and superb seafood restaurant
Waterville House, a 5 star is a very private secluded house on the ocean and ideal for a family group, owned by the golf club and only five mins from the course.
The Old Head Golf Course in Kinsale is a must play if you are visiting Ireland. The town of Kinsale is a beautiful fishing village, the gourmet capital on Ireland with lots of great restaurants and hotels and b&bs .
A great B/B in Kinsale is Jim Edwards Bar and Restaurant also one of the best seafood restaurant’s in town.
